Botox for Orbicularis Oris Muscle

fanny123 in USA asks:

“Can Botox be used for the orbicularis oris muscle? That particular muscle is too built up on my face and gives me a masculine appeal. I attached a photo of a woman who’s muscle around her top lip is built up similarly to mine. It’s the part circled in red.”

Botox(R) can be used for the orbicularis oris muscle. This is the muscle that encircles the lips and is predominantly responsible for pursing the lips, whistling, kissing and some of the function related to smiling. Nonetheless, one of the most common concerns about the lips is that of vertical lines, or “smoker’s” lines. Small doses of Botox(R) delivered into the wrinkles can achieve some good reduction of the vertical lines when done by an experienced cosmetic physician. It is important not to use too much Botox(R) in these areas as it can affect overall function of the mouth, but small doses do an excellent job of improving these vertical lines. Thus, as far as the orbicularis oris muscle this is the major area that can be treated. – David Santos MD, FACS

Septoplasty Vs Rhino-septoplasty for Deviated Septum

aura_sq in karachi asks:

“I have a deviated septum on the left side and a quite obvious hump on the nose. Is it possible to get rid of both problems with Septoplasty? Or do I have to go for Rhino-septoplasty (Rhinoplasty with Septoplasty) as doctor is suggesting in case hump is bothering me?

But the dual procedure is going to cost me quite a big amount! Please tell me if septoplasty can help reduce the hump just as well. Thanks.”

deviated sptum

Septoplasty is essentially a procedure that is inside the nasal cavity. This is a procedure to correct deviation or crookedness and/or obstruction related to the cartilage and bone structures of the septum. After Septoplasty is preformed the septum will be straight or straighter and better nasal breathing should be obtained. When doing this Septoplasty the dorsum or bridge of the nose might be affected and straightened a slight amount, but essentially is not a significantly altered.

Rhino-septoplasty will address both issues the septum internally and the bridge and nose externally or that portion of the nose that which we can visualize directly. I would not at all rely on the septoplasty to make any appreciable difference to the dorsum of the nose. When desiring to improve the dorsum or the bridge of the nose or to remove a hump Rhino-septoplasty is essentially required.

Treatment for Eye Hollowing After Restylane Injections

Unsuccess Beauty in Singapore asks:

“I had Restylane injections for my hollowing eyes 6 months ago. Since injection, my hollowing became deeper and till now it’s getting worse. What else can I do? I don’t dare to inject again. How can I make it back to my past look?”

Restylane before and after

Lower eyelid bagginess and lower eyelid hollowness are the hallmarks of aging eyes. Dermal fillers have been studied and utilized for treatment of the aging lower eyes. Restylane has probably been the most common injectable for this treatment. However, this is a challenging area to really affect an excellent result ultimately. The skin is thin in this area and there are also small blood vessels that are vulnerable to the injection and rendering a bruise in the area.

Nonetheless, Restylane has become an excellent treatment for the hollows underneath the eyes. I do think that one treatment is satisfactory, but not in all instances and further follow-up treatment within a week is a reasonable consideration. Standardly, I always recommend that patients come back a week later simply to assess for the overall benefit and to see if there is any touch-up that might be required. In the case of persistent hollow after Restylane injection, I simply would suggest a bit of further finesse with more Restylane. ” ~ David Santos, MD, FACS

Liquid Face Lift

There are many times when a particular individual may want to make a difference in their appearance but a full facelift is not appropriate.  In fact avoidance of surgery is attractive to many.  Many factors go into this individual decision: surgery is not inexpensive, and health concerns weigh in on a surgery decision.  A liquid face lift utilizes a combination of botox and filler to achieve a rejuvenation that is very satisfactory for the appropriate individual.  A common filler is restylane which is placed strategically in the face.  Particular areas often addressed are the laugh lines, the cheeks, the subcheek area (submalar area) and the periorbital rim (the eye hollow).  Botox is placed strategically in the between the brow glabellar area and crow’s feet region.  Additional areas are treated as needed.  Varying amounts of botox (or dysport) and resylane (or sculptra, juvederm, radiesse as alternatives) are utilized.  The key is that a good effort filler-botox injection will provide a full face rejuvenation that mimics a face lift, but without the surgery.
